Castle of Platamonas
The castle of Platamonas is the best-known landmark of the region. Set high above the coast, it shapes the landscape and offers a wide view over the Aegean.
The fortress stands on a historically important north–south route between Macedonia and Thessaly. Its present form goes back above all to the Middle Ages. Today the castle is among the most important historic sights of Pieria.

Mountain village
Old Panteleimonas
Only a few kilometres from Platamonas lies the traditional mountain village of Palaios Panteleimonas. The listed village sits on the slopes of Mount Olympus and is known for its traditional stone houses, narrow lanes, tavernas and the view down to the coast.
In the late afternoon and evening in particular, the village is a fine place to stroll through the lanes and stop at a taverna.

Archaeological park of Dion
At the foot of Mount Olympus lies the ancient city of Dion, one of the most important archaeological areas of Macedonia. In antiquity Dion was a major religious centre of the Macedonians, closely bound up with the worship of Zeus.
Today visitors can explore an extensive site with temple remains, ancient streets, baths, theatres, sanctuaries and many further excavations.

Mount Olympus is not only the highest mountain in Greece but also one of the best-known places in Greek mythology.
From Platamonas the area around Olympus is quickly reached. Litochoro in particular is a good starting point for hikes, walks and trips into the mountains.

Litochoro
Litochoro lies at the foot of Mount Olympus and is at once a mountain town, a place to visit and a starting point for hikes. In the centre there are small squares, cafés, tavernas and traditional houses.
The town also suits visitors who do not want to undertake a long hike.

Enipeas gorge
The Enipeas gorge is among the most beautiful parts of Mount Olympus. Paths lead through woodland, past rocks, small waterfalls and natural watercourses.
The gorge is particularly suited to visitors interested in nature, and to walkers.

Vale of Tempe
South of Platamonas lies the historic Vale of Tempe between Olympus and Ossa. Since antiquity the narrow gorge has been an important link between Macedonia and Thessaly.
Today both road and railway run through the region. The landscape along the river Pinios is particularly well known.
