Arrive relaxed on the Aegean: Platamonas lies on the coast of Pieria between Thessaloniki and Larissa and is easy to reach thanks to its position on Greece’s main north–south route.

For international guests, Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is usually the most practical starting point. From there Platamonas is easy to reach by rental car, transfer or public transport. Arriving in your own car is just as straightforward, as Platamonas lies only a few kilometres from the Greek motorway A1/E75.

By plane to Platamonas

For guests from Germany and other European countries, Thessaloniki “Makedonia” Airport (SKG) is the main way to arrive. Many European cities have direct or seasonal flights to Thessaloniki.

After landing, the drive first skirts Thessaloniki and then follows the A1/E75 motorway towards Katerini and Larissa. Heading south, Mount Olympus draws steadily closer before the route finally reaches the coast of Pieria.

From the airport to Platamonas it is roughly 120 kilometres by road and about 1:20 to 1:30 hours by car. Both figures are explicitly guide values only.

Rental car – the most flexible option

For a holiday in Platamonas a rental car is a particularly practical choice. It makes the transfer from the airport easier and gives you plenty of freedom during your stay.

From Platamonas you can easily reach Mount Olympus, Palaios Panteleimonas, ancient Dion, Litochoro, the Olympic Riviera, Meteora and further beaches and mountain villages. Anyone planning several day trips will benefit most from having a car.

Transfer or taxi

If you do not need a car during your holiday, you can cover the stretch between Thessaloniki Airport and Platamonas by private transfer or taxi. That means a direct ride with no changes – pleasant with luggage and sensible for families or groups travelling together.

Prices should be checked with the respective provider before travelling, or agreed in advance.

By your own car

Platamonas is very well connected to the Greek motorway network. The main north–south link is the A1/E75. It connects Thessaloniki, Katerini, Platamonas, Larissa and Athens, among others – which puts Platamonas directly on one of the most important traffic axes in Greece.

The last few kilometres lead down from the motorway to the coast and into the village. The address for your navigation system is Sokratous 6, 60065 Platamonas. Start the route on Google Maps – further distances can be found on the page Location and directions.

By car from Central Europe

If you drive from Germany, Austria or Switzerland, you will usually reach Greece via the Balkan route. A typical itinerary runs through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and North Macedonia into Greece.

After the Greek border the motorway continues towards Thessaloniki and then south on the A1/E75 in the direction of Platamonas. Depending on your starting point, other routes are possible as well.

Border rules, toll systems and traffic conditions can change and should be checked shortly before travelling.

By bus and public transport

Platamonas can also be reached without a rental car. From Thessaloniki Airport there are public bus services to the city centre, the main railway station and the central KTEL bus terminal. The regional bus network offers onward connections towards Pieria, Katerini and Platamonas.

Current timetables, routes and fares should be checked directly with the operators before travelling. They change seasonally, which is why we deliberately do not list them here.

By train

Pieria lies on the important railway line between Thessaloniki and Larissa, and Platamonas has its own stop on that line. In principle, arriving by train – or by a combination of train and local transfer – is therefore possible.

Because the Greek rail network can see timetable changes and temporary replacement services, we deliberately do not state fixed connections or departure times on this page. Hellenic Train itself advises checking current timetable changes before travelling.
