Excursions from Platamonas
From Platamonas the great destinations of northern Greece are all within a day trip – from Mount Olympus to the monasteries of Meteora.
Platamonas lies in such a way that almost every destination in northern Greece can be done as a day trip – and most of them even in half a day, leaving time for the beach in the afternoon.

How to plan a day out
The destinations of the region lie in three rings around Platamonas. The inner ring reaches about 35 kilometres and takes in Dion, Litochoro, the mountain villages and Katerini – all half-day destinations. The middle ring, out to around 100 kilometres, brings you to Vergina and Thessaloniki. Only Meteora is markedly further away.
Because it gets hot around midday in summer, a simple division has proved itself: set off early, see the destination in the morning, eat at lunchtime and spend the afternoon on the beach or on the balcony. Archaeological sites without shade – Dion and Vergina – are more pleasant in the morning than at three in the afternoon.
A good holiday day here has both: a trip in the morning and the sea in the afternoon.

Litochoro and the gateway to Olympus
A mountain town at the foot of the massif, with lanes, a square and a view into the mountains. From here the path leads into the Enipeas gorge – even a short stretch of it is worthwhile.
Bring proper footwear, even for a short walk at the entrance to the gorge.

Ancient Dion
An extensive archaeological park in the plain, with a museum of its own in the village. The sacred city of the Macedonians lies green and quiet directly below Olympus.
Little shade on the site – plan for the morning, a hat and water.

Palaios Panteleimonas
A restored mountain village above the coast: cobbled lanes, stone houses, tavernas on the village square and the view down to the Thermaic Gulf.
Lovely in the late afternoon too, when it is still hot down on the beach.

Katerini
The capital of the region: shopping streets, cafés, restaurants and a weekly market. The right trip for an overcast day or for larger purchases.

North and south of Platamonas further coastal villages and stretches of beach follow one another – from organised, with sunbeds, to almost deserted.

Castle of Platamonas
The shortest trip of all: the Byzantine fortress stands directly above the village, with a wide view over the gulf, and serves as a venue for events in summer.

Meteora
Monasteries on sheer rock pillars, UNESCO World Heritage since 1988. Around two hours’ drive each way – the longest but also the most striking trip in the region.
Check the opening times and closing days of the individual monasteries beforehand; keep shoulders and knees covered.

Thessaloniki
The White Tower, the waterfront, Byzantine churches and the old town of Ano Poli – plus market halls and cafés. A large city that opens up on foot.
Parking in the centre is tight; a car park on the edge of the centre saves the nerves.

Vergina
The royal tombs of Aigai, among them the tomb of Philip II of Macedon – an underground museum that many consider the most impressive in Greece.
Combines well with a stop in Veria.

Olympus National Park
If you drive not only as far as Litochoro but on into the national park, plan for the whole day – forests, gorges and views that change with every level of altitude.
Mountain weather changes quickly; mountain hikes need experience, equipment and up-to-date local information.
A week, well divided
A suggestion for dividing up a holiday week without turning the holiday into a tour: three days out, with days by the sea in between.
The order is deliberately chosen so that the longest trip falls in the middle of the week – by then you have arrived, but departure day is not yet in sight.

Three things that make a day out considerably more pleasant.

With small children
The mountain village, the beach and the castle combine well over short distances. Long drives such as Meteora or Thessaloniki are tiring with very small children – better two short trips than one long one.

The best time of day
Archaeological sites and Meteora in the morning, mountain villages and viewpoints in the late afternoon. In summer the midday hours belong to the shade or the water.

Travelling by car
The A1 motorway runs directly behind the village and connects all the destinations named here. The coast road is the slower but more beautiful link along the Riviera.
Everything that matters is close by
From Sokratous 6 the beach is a minute away, the castle a walk and Mount Olympus a short drive. Even the longest trip has you back on the balcony the same evening.
That is exactly why you do not have to choose here between a beach holiday and a journey of discovery.
