Platamonas is one of those places where much of what makes Greece special comes together: the sea, the closeness of Mount Olympus, centuries of history and the unhurried life of a Greek coastal town.
The town lies in the south of the Pieria region in Central Macedonia, right on the Aegean and only a few kilometres from Mount Olympus. Today Platamonas belongs to the municipality of Dion-Olympos and is a popular holiday destination, especially in the summer months.
Yet Platamonas is far more than a classic seaside resort. A holiday here means a mixture of history, sea, everyday Greek life and a landscape that reaches from the coast up into the mountains.
A place with a long history
The position of Platamonas already mattered a great deal in antiquity. Between the coast and the foothills of Mount Olympus there has always run an important link between Macedonia and Thessaly.
In antiquity, the area of today’s Platamonas was the site of the settlement of Herakleion, or Herakleia. The region therefore lay on a significant north–south route that was used for trade, travel and military movements over many centuries.
This strategic position shaped Platamonas for hundreds of years, and it also explains why a powerful fortress was later built on the heights above the present town.
The castle of Platamonas
The town’s best-known landmark is the castle of Platamonas, visible from far away above the coast. It was built at a strategically important point between Macedonia and Thessaly and still shapes the appearance of the whole region today.
The castle is now one of the most important sights in Pieria and offers an impressive view across the Aegean and the surrounding landscape.

From historic coastal town to popular holiday destination
Today Platamonas presents itself as a lively holiday resort that has nevertheless not entirely lost its original character.
Sandy and pebble beaches alternate along the coast. Some stretches are organised and offer sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars; others are quieter and closer to nature.
The landscape is especially distinctive: on one side lies the Aegean, on the other rise the green foothills of Mount Olympus. And above it all, again and again, the silhouette of the castle.
It is precisely this combination of sea, mountains and history that gives Platamonas its particular character.
Harbour, promenade and everyday Greek life
One focal point of today’s Platamonas is the small harbour.
Fishing boats lie here alongside leisure boats, while restaurants, cafés and small shops line the waterfront promenade. In the evening in particular, this area becomes a popular meeting place for locals and holidaymakers alike.
The tavernas around the harbour serve fresh fish, seafood, grilled meat and traditional Greek dishes, alongside small cafés and bars where you can spend the evening right by the sea.
Platamonas is therefore not only a place for a beach holiday. It is also a place where you can swim in the morning, stroll through the small streets at midday and end the day with mezedes, fish and a glass of wine by the water.
Platamonas and Mount Olympus
Only a few kilometres from Platamonas rises Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.
The closeness of sea and mountains creates an extraordinary landscape and makes Platamonas a good base for excursions, hiking and time spent in nature.
Platamonas today
Despite its long history, Platamonas does not feel like a historical open-air museum.
History is instead part of daily life. The castle belongs to the familiar skyline, fishing boats lie in the harbour, and only a few metres away there are modern cafés, restaurants and shops.
In summer the town becomes noticeably livelier. Guests from Greece and many other European countries come to the coast, restaurants and beach bars fill up, and a relaxed atmosphere lasts along the promenade until late in the evening.
At the same time Platamonas has remained a Greek coastal town that grew naturally. Just a little away from the main promenade you still meet the everyday life of the people who live and work here.

It is exactly this mixture that makes Platamonas special.
Here the Aegean and Mount Olympus, medieval history and modern holiday life, tourist infrastructure and everyday Greek life meet directly.
